PLANETS & POSSIBILITIES: A LOOK AT THE ASTROLOGY OF APRIL 2018

© 2018 - Reprinted with permission from Shining Lotus Metaphysical Bookstore newsletter April 2018

by Sally Shotwell

It's Spring and we embrace the idea of a personal renewal as Aries Season enfolds us in its initiating energies. The Sun (our consciousness),  Mercury (our thought porcesses) and Uranus (our authenticity) are all is this fiery, vibrant sign which is ruled by assertive Mars.  Because Mercury is retrograde until April 15, our focus,  which would normally tend toward the adventuresome, is concerned with our reconsidering our priorities and perceptions.  Along this same line, Mars (our vitality), Saturn (our maturity) and Pluto (transcendence) are hanging out in earthy, responsible Capricorn,  helping us use our resources wisely so we can take advantage of future opportunities.
Are we aware of how we are responding to our environment?  The more connected we are, the more secure we feel about making decisions.

April 1 Mercury and the Sun are as one and this alignment is fine if we remember to monitor our responses since egos are involved.  April 2  Mars and Saturn are together and, again,  let's temper our actions since stress is in the air.

April 4 Mercury gets in a tussle with Mars which indicates heated interactions, these we know to avoid if at all possible.  The 5th Mercury becomes embroiled with Saturn and, here again, there's no meeting of the minds so let's not invest in an uncomfortable exchange.

April 7 things lighten up when lovely Venus in earthy, fertile Taurus communes with Saturn,  reassuring us about our judgment and the trustworthiness of  those around us.  On the 11th she interacts with Mars, creating a warm  and affectionate connection  and she follows on the 12th with a profound meeting with empathetic Neptune.  Neptune is in watery Pisces and he brings a soulfulness to this encounter. If we pause and allow this influence to seep into our being, we are renewed and can access our intuition. Is there time for stillness in our schedule?

April 14 expansive Jupiter, in intense and watery Scorpio, finds comradeship with relentless Pluto (whose home sign is Scorpio) and their combined power really encourages us to explore our full potential,  they don't play around. What are we discovering about ourself which has been concealed or denied?  Let's remember that Pluto digs up everything and frequently finds treasures.  Scorpio reveals them and we mustn't be afraid of this process!  It comes in handy when, also on the 14th, Mars touches base with Neptune and our psychic nature attunes us with others,  opening up possibilities we never would have dreamed of.  This is exciting and prepares us to take advantage of the upcoming New Moon!

April 15 is a day we've been waiting for - Mercury goes direct!   He's still in his shadow until the 29th but this is still an improvement and contributes greatly to the positive aura which envelopes the New Moon (new beginnings) in Aries.  It is aspected by Mars, Pluto, the Sun and Uranus  and the Sabian Symbol states "Through imagination a lost opportunity is regained:  Revision of attitude and inner revaluation."    With all these influences contributing to our mission to evolve,  we have guidance in preparing for changes in our lives and the inventive ways  to open our minds. Dane Rudhyar stresses  that what counts is "the development of UNDAUNTED FAITH in the pursuit of one's ideals"  even when it's hard to know what is success and failure.

April 17 Venus and Jupiter interact and we may feel optimism but we may become careless due to too much of a good thing either feeling-was or with money.  She quickly moves on to fraternize with Pluto and our interactions are intense, perhaps deepening an established relationship.  Let's just remember the Pluto equates with Power so we need to be prepared for any eventuality. This also holds true on the 18th when the Sun embraces Uranus and can lead us to be surprisingly unrestrained in our dealings with others. This is a recipe for unexpected changes in situations. Saturn turns retrograde guiding us to persevere in getting organized for future developments (which, hopefully we're doing already).

April 19 the Sun enters earthy, stable Taurus and we immediately feel a certain calm accompanying this sign ruled by the side of Venus who relishes Nature.  It's a fixed sign and committed to nurturing what Aries has created.  Let's take time to indulge our senses in honor of this event!

April 22 Pluto turns retrograde and continues his many years residence in Capricorn but Uranus leaves Aries next month for Taurus.  This  should prove interesting.

April 24 Venus enters airy, communicative Gemini and her gaze begins to spread far and wide.  Should we be in a committed relationship, this could cause comment!  Mars and Jupiter combine their strength to be effective in challenges, let's just not engage them in interpersonal issues.

April 25 Mercury and Saturn are clashing which we know creates negative circumstances which we need to avoid and the 26th Mars and Pluto hug each other and can get up to all sorts of  power related business.  Let's remember to deep breathe!

April 29 the Full Moon (culmination) in Scorpio opposite the Taurus Sun brings up emotional issues relating to financial and other intense activities which can only be resolved by compromise which necessitates communication.  The Symbol states "A fellowship supper reunites old comrades:  The overtones of human relationships based on a community of work or experience."   We may not have obvious common ground to share but,  with an open mind, our social consciousness can expand to help us be inclusive.  We are all in this together!

Blessings!

PLANETS & POSSIBILITIES: A LOOK AT THE ASTROLOGY OF MARCH 2018

© 2018 - Reprinted with permission from Shining Lotus Metaphysical Bookstore newsletter March 2018

by Sally Shotwell

The month begins with the Sun (our consciousness), Mercury (our thought processes), Venus (our values) and Neptune (the Infinite), all in dreamy, compassionate Neptune-ruled Pisces. This watery, emotional sign is associated with our imagination and nurtures our soul, but can be disorienting as we deal with demands of our every day existence. Fortunately, the Full Moon (culmination) in early, practical, Mercury-ruled Virgo(opposite Pisces) March 1 helps us to combine tapping into the creativity we’re experiencing while not losing ourselves to tempting escapism. The Sabian Symbol states, “After the wedding, the groom steals the veil away from the bride: The penetrating and unveiling power of the trained mind” and alludes to the “physical action with psychological and spiritual overtones” we need for our own progress. Virgo assists us in distinguishing the valuable from the expendable in our lives and we should take advantage of this help as we also have other beneficent aspects at our disposal.
March 1 we also have lovely Venus and optimistic Jupiter in watery, intense Scorpio promoting our sincerity and authenticity when interacting with others which perks us up on the 2nd, as Mercury joins in the action by offering a knowledgeable, communicative factor to the picture. March 4 the Pisces influence extends further as the Sun and Neptune co-mingle and strongly encourage us to pursue our altruistic and spiritual aspirations, stretching ourselves beyond our material concerns. Mercury and Venus gracefully waltz together before heading off into fiery Aries and let’s use this watery interlude to nurture our sensitivities and bask in the mysterious.
March 5/6 Mercury and Venus enter the sign of the individualistic explorer which is ruled by Mars (our vitality) and we now become restless to act. With Venus ruling relationships and Mercury supervising communications in Aries, we want to be sure our enthusiasm in dealing with others is well thought out. This is especially important since Jupiter (expansion) is turning retrograde March 8 in intense Scorpio, directing us to internalize and revisit our belief systems and this can trigger unusual reactions in us as we relate to others.
March 11 we have a powerful meeting between energetic Mars in fiery, forward-looking Sagittarius, and innovative Uranus who is gradually wrapping up his historic stay in Aries. We can tap in to the infectious, futuristic vision they exude and bravely embrace new avenues of self-expression. Simultaneously, the Sun and Pluto, Lord of the Underworld, are prodding us to be confident and give ourselves credit for gaining the self-awareness we need to persevere. We need to keep all this in mind March 13 as Venus and Saturn (boundaries) in earthy Capricorn clash and potentially cause relationship stress, but we know to extricate ourselves and are soon rewarded for our good judgement. The Sun and Jupiter offer us the where-with-all to have a positive attitude about ourselves as we prepare for the March 17 New Moon.
This New Moon (new beginnings) in Pisces acknowledges that our efforts are paying off. The Symbol “The Harvest Moon illuminates a clear autumn sky: The light of fulfillment that blesses work well done.” Although we’re on the verge of Spring, the “reaping of the good harvest” still applies to the concept of our sowing what we cultivate and we have it available as we begin a New Astrological Year. Also, Mars enters earthy, serious Capricorn, adding gravitas to the event but there’s a lightening in the atmosphere the 19th as Mercury happily snuggles up with Venus in preparation for our welcoming the Arian Vernal Equinox on the 20th. The days begin to grow longer and we celebrate the fecundity associated with the theme of rebirth in the Northern Hemisphere. The exuberance makes all this possible but, this year we must build into our expectations the subduing influence that the March 23 Mercury retrograde in Aries imposes on our plans. As usual, we’re in a time which requires us to closely monitor our decisions and commitments, reviewing and revising how we communicate with others.
March 23 and 24, we need to employ a hands off policy as first Venus (love) and Pluto (obsession) stir up a lot of passion and power plays, followed by the Sun and Mars impulsively confronting each other. Are we remembering our strategies in remaining detached during trying times through deep breathing and other calming aids?
March 28 Venus and Uranus connect and let’s prepare for stimulating relationship experiences and sudden attractions. This sounds fun, but let’s remember we have retrograde Mercury and Jupiter in the background counseling, “Don’t get carried away, Lover!”. The 29th the Sun disagrees with Saturn, causing our expectations to take a hit but, if we moderate our enthusiasm, we come out unscathed. The 30th Venus enters her home territory of earthy Taurus and we feel an appreciation of the physical world around us. Let’s pay attention to what Nature is offering us and figure out a way to enjoy it.
March 31 is the second Full Moon of the month, this time in airy, relationship-oriented and aesthetic Libra, also ruled by Venus. Here we have the independent Aries Sun opposite the prototype of interdependence trying to find common ground while Saturn and Mars, in Capricorn, are mucking up the works. If we can keep communications open, with greater understanding, we complement each other. The Symbol is “A professor peering over his glasses at his students: Problems attending the transmission of knowledge in a special cultural setup.” We’re taking our mission a step further than the professor by lowering the boundary between us to relate our differences, thus encouraging dialogue. Are we allowing ourselves to connect with others who have unfamiliar world views? As we do this, our lives become a lot more interesting and we get a new take on ourselves. Isn’t being stimulated refreshing?
Blessings!

PLANETS & POSSIBILITIES: A LOOK AT THE ASTROLOGY OF FEBRUARY 2018

© 2018 - Reprinted with permission from Shining Lotus Metaphysical Bookstore newsletter February 2018

by Sally Shotwell

This month begins with our being under the influence of a very powerful Full Moon(culmination) Lunar Eclipse in fiery, heart-based Leo. As we are aware, eclipses bring with them unexpected insights or events which lead us to new ways of seeing something important in our lives. Since the Sun(our consciousness), Mercury (our thought processes) and Venus(what we most value) are in Aquarius, let’s see where this sign’s influence is most likely to resonate with us. Actually, fixed air Aquarius is noted for its brilliant, innovative thinking and desire to improve the lot of humanity, all be it, from an emotionally detached position. When we ponder where we’re directing our attention, are we releasing out of date expectations of the future and entertaining new possibilities? Uranus, the Great Awakener, rules this sign and introduces change when its necessary for growth and February 6 lovely Venus teams up with him introducing a way to connect in an exciting fashion.  Her role becomes more subdued as she enters watery, dreamy Pisces February 10 where her more romantic, feeling side comes into play. She  reminds us that our fulfilling relationships connect us on a deeper level than just the mental.  Are we taking time to muse and give our minds a break?

We need this  since the Sun is being encouraged by extravagant Jupiter in watery, Scorpio to perhaps go out on a limb with some involvement – let’s just pend for the time being.

February 13
it’s communicative Mercury’s turn to deal with Jupiter’s grandiose ideas but our attention is captured by the Sun and future-oriented Uranus in fiery, dynamic Aries.  This is a match made in heaven since they’re speaking the same language, sharing uninhibited, spirited ideas which lead to freedom-producing possibilities to be followed up on.

February 15
Uranus gets in touch with curious Mercury and their their combined intuition and inventiveness come up with ways to allow these progressive possibilities to become a reality.  All this is leading up to the Solar New Moon (new beginnings) Eclipse in visionary Aquarius (also 2/15) which is packed with activity.

It’s opposite the position that was held by the August 21, 2017 Great American Eclipse in Leo so issues we remember that came up then will be swirling around now and we have an opportunity to check on how we’re doing.  The Sabian Symbol suggests that we’re taking the lessons seriously through INTELLIGENT FORESIGHT.  “A tree felled and sawed to ensure a supply of wood for the winter:  Knowledge and skills used in its natural surroundings for the satisfaction of vital basic needs.”  The message touches the issue that to ensure our well being we must continue to participate in the natural
world, using technology to serve us, not control us. Are we connecting with our environment?

February 17 is a busy day since the Sun and Mercury embrace in Aquarius, solidifying their intellectual achievements prior to Mercury’s entrance into idealistic Pisces where his focus becomes more intuitive. The Sun joins him and Venus on the 18th and we feel the atmosphere become more moist and flowing as this mutable water sign takes center stage.  Its symbol is two fishes connected by a thread,  swimming in different directions in an endless ocean.  This illustrates the duality we all face in connecting with the material world while also reaching beyond it.

February 21 loving Venus and other-worldly Neptune dance together and share with us fertile ground for emotionally rich encounters and creative artistic endeavors. Let’s take advantage of this charming opportunity to spend time with caring companions or just daydream – we deserve it. We’re already grounded thanks to Mercury being in contact with practical Saturn in earthy Capricorn so we won’t go off the rails.

February 25
gentle Venus is pitted against aggressive Mars in fiery, adventurous Sagittarius and this doesn’t lead to a happy exchange since she’s in no mood to entertain edgy drama, neither are we and we don’t have to. Mercury and Neptune are together in transcendent Pisces and  imagination is running high but the situation is ephemeral and not conducive to our making decisions until the Sun and Saturn come on the scene and help us reasonably define our potential and opportunities.  With this vetting we can pursue our ambitions.

February 27 sensitive Venus and relentless Pluto in Capricorn put their heads together and he shares his profound perceptions with her, helping her better understand others’ motivations and burning away the fog that surrounds everything Pisces.  Alliances can thrive with this clarity and let’s use it ourselves in evaluating current and past relationships.
This is the time to be seeing questionable affiliations with rose-colored glasses, we have better ways to spend our time and energy.

February 28
Mercury is busy first dealing with Mars  in circumstances similar Venus’s recent experience due to them both swimming through emotional waters. They feel under attack by the God of War.  This is the time for us to remember our strategies to detach from hostile exchanges and we’re really in luck as again Pluto comes to the rescue (isn’t this a new role?). He  guides Mercury in understanding the meaning of the profound drama we’re living through. Let’s  remember that, even though it may seem allusive, we are playing an important role on the stage!

Happy Valentine’s Day and Chinese New Year of the Earth Dog (2/15)!
Blessings!

PLANETS & POSSIBILITIES: A LOOK AT THE ASTROLOGY OF JANUARY 2018

© 2017 - Reprinted with permission from Shining Lotus Metaphysical Bookstore newsletter January 2018

by Sally Shotwell

We’re no doubt feeling propelled to get down to business as the New year arrives and it’s very understandable.  The influence of Capricorn pervades the scene with its practical, responsible take on things, especially because the Sun (our consciousness),  Venus (love and values), Saturn (boundaries) and Pluto (transformation) are all busy helping us put in place the ambitious agenda we’ve been considering.   This earthy sign’s motivation is to create sound structures  which our society may count  on and we feel safe.  One of its symbols is the Mountain Goat who shows fortitude and skill in reaching the summit of a high mountain peek.  It’s polar opposite is watery, Cancer who also has it’s own agenda to insure our well being but it entails the nurturing and protection of those we cherish in our personal live.  Our assignment is to integrate both of these urges in order to balance our own urges and relax in peace of mind.  With relaxation we’re able to receive and absorb subtle influences which aren’t immediately evident.  Enter the January 1 Full Moon in Cancer which offers us the opportunity to address our situation.

The Sabian Symbol states “A Chinese woman nursing a baby whose aura reveals him to be the reincarnation of a great teacher:  The revelation of latent worth in an experience once it is seen in its deeper meaning.”   We’re encouraged to look beyond appearance and discover the innate in ourselves and others, beyond judgment and glamorization.  Are we spending time with ourselves in stillness, allowing Cancer’s healing water to pour through us?

Let’s hold on to that image as we consider the excitement  January 2 brings with innovative Uranus turning direct in fiery, assertive Aries.  He’s been leading us on an inward journey and it’s now time for us to regroup and forge ahead and  overtly deal with his insistent call for us to shed what’s inauthentic in our lives.  That’s why he’s know as the Great Awakener.  As we accept the changes we’re going through, new doors are opening  but let’s take advantage of the Saturnine stability we have on hand to keep us grounded.  January 6 Mercury (our thought processes), in fiery adventurous Sagittarius, joins him to brainstorm and we may be stimulated to venture into unknown territory.   January 8 the Sun and optimistic Jupiter, in watery Scorpio,  join the scenario and contribute a reality check since when Scorpio is involved,  deep scrutiny prevails.   The action continues into the 9th so let’s keep our equilibrium by remembering, should things seem overwhelming, to deep breathe and go along for the ride.

January 10 Mercury (communication) enters already crowded Capricorn and our interactions may take on a still more serious tone.   We now want to put in place the inspiring ideas cooked up during his stay in expansive Sagittarius and Saturn shares his sound advise with him the 12th.  Uranus, meanwhile, is irritating Venus and the Sun on the 13 and 14 and we may feel a bit edgy but the support of New Moon in Capricorn on the 16th is reassuring.  This New Moon (new beginnings) is supported by his compatriots  the Sun, Mercury, Venus and Pluto.  This line-up encourages us to persevere in our efforts to increase our self-understanding.  The Symbol states “Pilgrims climbing the steps leading to a mountain shrine:  The ascent of the individualized consciousness to the highest realizations reached by the spiritual leaders of our culture.”

Isn’t it fortunate that we have so much wise and useful material at our disposal to guide us as we explore our own unique approach towards self-realization.

January 17 Venus, Goddess of Love, Beauty and Money, enters airy, intellectual Aquarius and we may become more interested in big picture issues beyond our immediate lives.  This may entail our joining with others in a group effort since this sign’s perspective is broadly inclusive.  The 19th the Sun joins her and we’re reminded of the Water Bearer who pours down  from a jug upon the earth the knowledge, or, in some interpretations, energy/electricity which sets humankind free.  Quixotic Uranus is the sign’s ruler and let’s remember to temper the lure of the intellect  which can lead us away from our feeling nature.  We’re all part of a whole and the individual wellbeing of each of us is what makes it complete.

January 24 Mercury and Pluto, God of the Underworld, contribute their efforts to the ongoing process of revealing what has remained hidden.  Since they’re in Capricorn, the sign of authority  and prominent institutions,  we may as well resign ourselves to more disquieting revelations.  We realize that while this is a trend which continues to gain steam, we have a responsibility to ourselves to find reassurance in our genuine relationships with others and inspiration where ever we can find it.  Mars comes to the rescue the 26th when he enters fiery, forward-looking Sagittarius and, through his dynamism, assists in fueling our joie de vivre.  Are we taking the time relax and have fun with no other goal in mind?

The Full Moon Lunar Eclipse (change) in fiery Leo January 31 may help us answer this question.  Leo is ruled by the Sun and is heart-centered, helping us to tap into the purity of the Divine Child who shares his love and joy with us.   Mercury is simultaneously entering Aquarius and accentuating our mental processes and here we have another opportunity to create balance between the heart and mind. Being a Super Moon and an Eclipse ramps up the message of the Symbol which is “An evening party of adults on a lawn illuminated by fancy lanterns:  Group relaxation in fashionable surroundings as an escape from work routine.”    We want to enjoy ourselves and enter into festivities but Dane Rudhyar comments that we don’t want to succumb to social fashion or “intellectuality or wit” and miss the boat on sincerity.   With all the work we’re doing, we don’t have time to be sidetracked by the superficial!

Blessings!

PLANETS & POSSIBILITIES: A LOOK AT THE ASTROLOGY OF DECEMBER 2017

© 2017 - Reprinted with permission from Shining Lotus Metaphysical Bookstore newsletter December 2017

by Sally Shotwell

We’re now in the last month of the calendar year which offers us the transitional events of the Winter Solstice mid month and the entrance into 2018 not long after.  The demands of the Holiday Season can be daunting but we have the Sun (our consciousness),  Teacher Saturn, Mercury(our thought processes), and Venus, Goddess of Love, Beauty and Money, all in Sagittarius.  This fire sign is ruled by expansive Jupiter and his  symbol is the Archer, a Centaur (half man, half horse) who always aims his arrow upward to the stars, striving to connect with universal understanding.

We ourselves can integrate into our attitude  this big picture approach as we tackle the demands which swirl around us this time of year.  Lovely Venus has arrived on the scene December 1 and she quickly embraces an exuberant approach to interpersonal exchanges.  We may find ourselves becoming more adventuresome in our own relationships – what can we lose?

Also on December 1, we have assertive Mars in airy, harmony-loving Libra at odds with with unpredictable Uranus in fiery, in “me first” Aries and it’s best if we take care of our business and avoid this clash of wills. Fortunately,  December 2  our detachment pays off  when optimistic Jupiter in watery Scorpio gets together with compassionate Neptune in watery, transcendent Pisces create a benevolent environment, striking a spiritual chord for us to tune in to.  This promotes our faith in each other and the courage to pursue our dreams.

Are we allowing ourselves time to relax and receive the information our inner voice is sharing with us?

December 3 mental Mercury turns retrograde in inspiring Sagittarius, calling on us to refine our perceptions. Although may we interpret  this to be a set back in our progress, the need for us to rethink and review what we’re engaged in can save us from avoidable missteps.  This reflection pays off as the Full Moon(culmination) in mental Gemini is in a lively dialogue with the Sun in philosophical Sagittarius as dreamy Neptune enters in, muddying the communication.  The Sabian Symbol comes to the rescue, pointing us to the importance of our pursuing our self-awareness and independence. It uses an image which predates the Civil Rights Movement and states “A Negro girl fights for her independence in the city:  Liberation from the ghosts of the past.”  She didn’t have the resources we have at our disposal but he courage saw her through.  Let’s  work on how we can move beyond what aspect of our past stands between us and freedom.  Where do we feel blocked?
December 9 assertive Mars enters watery, driven Scorpio and enters the arena where Jupiter is holding court, investigating all things hidden. There’s a lot of emotion attached to the revelations which are surfacing, both in our personal lives and the avalanche of material from the public realm. Processing yucky stuff can be very draining and we need to be mindful that any time Scorpio is in the picture we must remind ourselves to compensate the dark with exposure to enlivening circumstances and material.  What lightens up our lives?

December 10 Venus and Neptune rendezvous and share idealistic expectations of how interpersonally we can flourish.  Let’s ponder what they bring to mind as we bask in this warm atmosphere.
Between December 12 and 15 Mercury socializes with the Sun and Venus easing us into the Holiday Season.  December 16 the Sun and innovative Uranus add an element of
excitement but we may need some down time to avoid a feeling of overwhelm.  Let’s not forget deep breathing and Rescue Remedy!

December 17/18  we want our wits about us as the New Moon (new beginnings) in Sagittarius encourages us to embody this inspiring sign’s essence.  The Symbol is “A sculptor at his work:  The ability to project his vision upon and give form to materials.”   The more we understand ourselves the more we can contribute to others.

What resources do we have to share?

December 19 Teacher Saturn returns home to his home to earthy Capricorn for the first time in 29 years and it is a BIG DEAL.  He’s all about our taking the insights gained during his time in Sagittarius and putting them to practical use.  We become ambitious to get organized and improve our circumstances and those of others. Flexibility is also in the works since this is a cardinal sign and automatically takes initiative when changes are unavoidable (which we are experiencing now).  December 21 the Sun meets up with him during the Winter Solstice, perhaps the most important turning point of the year.  It’s seen as a special time because  it promises the return of the Light and throughout history celebrations both sacred and profane have been observed.  How might we pay homage to this event?

December 22
Mercury turns direct but it’s a good idea if we off on making important decisions, etc. until next month when important information appears.

December 24
Venus changes gowns and her mood becomes more serious as she enters Capricorn and helps the Sun celebrate on December 25, Christmas Day.  This isn’t a recipe for hilarity but we experience their commitment to love and loyalty which extends a sense of security and  comfort which is welcome.  Saturn is also on hand, keeping things real.

December 31 is a date filed with symbolism and it may be bittersweet for us as visions from the past appear in our mind’s eye.  The Moon (our emotions) is in airy, bright Gemini and he ends up spending time with Mercury and Uranus so our thoughts my branch out in intriguing directions, setting the stage for a revitalized New Year. Isn’t it nice we’ll be able to compare notes as 2018 unfolds!!!

Happy New Year and Blessings!

PLANETS & POSSIBILITIES: A LOOK AT THE ASTROLOGY OF NOVEMBER 2017

© 2017 - Reprinted with permission from Shining Lotus Metaphysical Bookstore newsletter November 2017

by Sally Shotwell

The month  begins with the Sun (our consciousness), Mercury (our thought processes) and Jupiter (expansion) in watery, formidable Scorpio.  It is ruled by Pluto, Lord of the Underworld, who delves deep into the mysteries hidden below the surface of our lives, from personal to global.  The emphasis now is on our emotional wellbeing as we are exposed to new information which can change our expectations do to the material that's dug up.   When we discover  the source of our  behavior which is surprising and not welcome, it's  a blessing  if we can remain connected to our meaningful relationships and activities.  Here's where we rely on our common sense and  ability to determine  what deserves our attention and focus.

Fortunately,   Benevolent Jupiter, now placed in this profound sign,  is cooperating with it's ruler Pluto who is in serious, responsible Capricorn.  Their influence promises to offer us valuable insights which can help us is our transformation but they are intense.  Here' where the other planetary cycles give us the assistance we need to keep our eye on the ball as change swirls around us.
November 3/4 the Full Moon (culmination) is in earthy, practical  Taurus, ruled by sensuous Venus, opposes the Sun in relentless Scorpio and  the issue of what we most value may come up  when our assets are involved.  The Sabian Symbol states;  "A young couple window-shopping:  The fascination of the youthful ego with the products of the culture."
What is our personal relationship to our material possessions as well as the social/cultural  contacts  which define our circumstances?  Are we concerned that they may be distracting us from  addressing meaningful issues in our life?
November 5 mental Mercury enters fiery, optimistic Sagittarius, directing us to expand our horizons and have fun in the process.  This is a good antidote to the wistfulness  we may feel as the encroaching darkness descends  ( Daylight Savings Time ends).    November 7  Venus enters Scorpio and she raises  the ante on our desire to develop intimacy in our close relationships.  This requires a true sharing of our inner most feelings and this is where the courage of the Scorpio Sun helps us to venture into unknown territory.  Are we inspired to deepen communication and reveal more of ourselves to promote mutual understanding?
November 11 this comes in handy as persistent Saturn, soon to leave Sagittarius, is sparked by electric Uranus in fiery Aries to seriously combine innovative vision with sound strategies to help us achieve our goals.  Fast forward to November 13 when Venus and Jupiter commingle and promote a generous attitude and share their inclination towards good fortune . Mercury in Sagittarius and Neptune in otherworldly Pisces are not getting along but  let's not allow their problem keep us from basking in the blessings the Goddess of Love who expects us  enjoy  each other.   The  16 she connects with Neptune and compassion is the name of the game.  Are we nurturing ourselves and others?
November 18 the New Moon (new beginnings) in resourceful Scorpio telegraphs that the power of regeneration is available to us if we are resourceful.  This requires diligence on our part to resist the superfluous diversions which bombard us.  The Symbol states:  "A military band marches noisily on through the city streets.  The aggressive gratification of cultural values."  The key word here is "aggressive" which connotes an ego orientation which we can do without.
November 19 presents us with an opportunity to detach as Pluto irritates Mars which means a power play is probably in the works.  The 21st our spirits are lifted when Venus and Pluto, now in a good mood,  support each other as passionate feelings surface and the Sun slips into adventurous Sagittarius.   The ruler of this sign is Magnificent Jupiter and  its symbol is the centaur whose bow and arrow are aimed at the sky with its unlimited possibilities.  We're  gearing up for the holiday season and this optimism is welcome!
November 22 Neptune, in watery, transcendant  Pisces is moving forward, after spending months taking us on an inner voyage, guiding us to redirect our subliminal  dreams  to those we can manifest  while recognizing our  spiritual yearning.    Jupiter is joining forces with him so we may feel particularly idealistic as we gather with others to celebrate Thanksgiving the 23'd.
November 25 Mercury happily consults with unpredictable Uranus in fiery Aries and they come up with unexpected avenues for us to pursue.  This is promising since the 27th the Messenger of the Gods consults with stable Saturn to vet any decisions we make and leads to success due to the beneficial melding of tradition with inspiration.  This bodes well for us as we branch out and  keep an open mind to all the options  available to us!
Happy Thanksgiving and Blessings!

PLANETS & POSSIBILITIES: A LOOK AT THE ASTROLOGY OF OCTOBER 2018

© 2017 - Reprinted with permission from Shining Lotus Metaphysical Bookstore newsletter October 2017

by Sally Shotwell

As the month begins we find the Sun (our consciousness), Mercury (our thought processes) and gigantic Jupiter (our belief systems) in airy, congenial Libra. Its ruler is lovely Venus, its symbol is the Scales of Justice and it is associated with the art of diplomacy. This is dependent upon our ability to be dispassionate as we weigh the merits of the different sides of an issue in order to come to a constructive conclusion. To find balance and harmony can be a tricky business but, as we remind ourselves, being detached helps us make good decisions. October promises to give us plenty of opportunities to practice this strategy!

October 1, energetic Mars in precise, earthy Virgo connects with focused Pluto in earthy, productive Capricorn to motivate us to hone our skills to achieve our goals. On the 3rd Venus, also in Virgo, shares her constructive insights with Pluto,  helping him soften his  stark take on relationship issues. This element of flexibility helps us prepare for the October 5 Full Moon (culmination) in fiery, independent Aries. The Moon is, of course, opposite the Libra Sun who is committed to resolving the dilemma facing us all. How do we reconcile our need for independence with while satisfying our desire for togetherness?  Both Mercury and Pluto are also in the act, further confusing issues. This suggests that we pend on any action until we're better informed.
The Sabian Symbol states: "An unexploded bomb reveals an unsuccessful social protest! An immature evaluation of the possibility of transforming the status quo." Venus and Mars do rendezvous briefly and send us the message that, no matter what, we must have faith in the Power of Love.

October 8, somber Saturn in fiery, adventurous Sagittarius is being rude to Venus but Mercury and the Sun deliver harmonious interactions which lift our spirits. Pluto is acting up with Mercury and the Sun on the 9th and it's important for us to resist being dragged into this volatile clash of wills because we have a big event we want to be fresh for. It's the October 10 arrival of Jupiter, King of the Gods, into watery, transformative Scorpio! We are privy to an adventure in which we explore mysterious and profound aspects of ourselves. Pluto is Scorpio's ruler and, as we've experienced many a time, he is all about unearthing everything concealed. This includes stuff we need to get rid of but, also, tremendous treasure we can now only imagine.

October 15, captivating Venus comes home to Libra and draws our attention to the aesthetic beauty and charm which is available to us if we seek it out. This is a great antidote to a lot of the unsettling input which swirls around us. Are we taking time to schedule pleasurable activities with like minded companions?

Keeping this in mind helps us as Mercury opposes unpredictable Uranus in Aries October 15. This temperamental association has the potential to either guide us to brilliant new perspectives or unnerve us with unexpected revelations. Let's deep breathe, detach and go along for the ride.

October 17, mental Mercury enters Scorpio, further emphasizing our focus to get down to business in delving into taboo topics, including instincts we are uncomfortable with, death and sex. The 18th he joins forces with Jupiter who shares his largesse and nurturing us with compassion as we venture forth into this unknown territory. All this leads up to the October 19 New Moon (new beginnings) in Libra with authentic Uranus on hand to stir up the pot. The Symbol's message is "An airplane sails, high in the clear sky: A consciousness able to transcend the conflicts and pressures of personal life." In our quest, let's avail ourselves of the tremendous wisdom of those who came before us.
October 22, Mars enters Libra and we may feel a push to become more involved with those we count on. Are we interested in enlarging our circle of friends?

The same day, the Sun enters watery, emotional Scorpio, the sign whose three symbols represent serious transformation (the Scorpion, the Eagle and the Phoenix, respectively). Our psyches are already processing a lot so we should be prepared when Mercury joins forces with intuitive Neptune in other worldly, watery Pisces. This combination encourages us to honor our imagination and daydreaming. Emotional intelligence is also at our disposal and let's find a way to nurture it through stillness.

October 27, Venus and Pluto are at cross purposes so let's have an escape plan should our interpersonal experiences go south, but clever Mercury appears and soothes the Dark Lord's ruffled feathers. October 29, the Moon (our unconscious) enters Pisces which makes for a slew of planets in watery, psychic signs. This should make for a very interesting Halloween and let's be ready for anything!

Happy Halloween and Blessings!

PLANETS & POSSIBILITIES: A LOOK AT THE ASTROLOGY OF SEPTEMBER 2017

by Sally Shotwell

The Total Solar Eclipse may have come and gone but its impact on our lives is yet to be determined. Although its fiery Leo energy is intriguing to ponder, we're being called to deal with the requirements of our practical existence right now. The Sun (our consciousness) in realistic, earthy Virgo helps us sort through the material we're considering and to determine what's either relevant or perhaps misleading. This sign, ruled by brainy Mercury embraces the task of concretizing the creative energy generated by the Sun while in Leo. This September, however, we find ourselves in a peculiar situation since Mercury (our thought processes) begins the month retrograde commingling with the recent Eclipse point. Until he completes his journey and totally reemerges from his shadowy trip, we must review all pertinent information before making important decisions while making sure our communications are clear and our travel arrangements are in order. September 19 he's back in action and welcomes lovely Venus who is just arriving in Virgo. The New Moon takes place during the evening so let's pay particular attention to this date.

In the meantime, it's worthwhile for us to check out planetary activity since it sets the tone of the fluctuating environment we find ourselves in. September 2 Mars (our vitality) is in Leo happily commingling with rebellious Uranus in fiery Aries, urging us to experiment and venture beyond our comfort zone. The 3rd he and Mercury join forces to produce new ideas. Both being in Leo, their childlike delight in finding adventure may rub off on us. Enjoying ourselves is actually a good thing.
Are we allowing ourselves to relax and welcome whimsy into our lives?

September 5 the practical Sun gets in a tussle with otherworldly Neptune in watery Pisces. Our inner life may flourish but our purpose may be blurry. However, warrior Mars enters service-oriented Virgo and we may feel compelled to reach out to others who are in need. Mercury, still in Leo, turns direct and continues the slow trip to his release. This calls for patience on our part.

September 5/6 the Full Moon (culmination) in compassionate, watery Pisces opposes the Sun in precise Virgo and we realize that feelings and logic can, and must coexist if we are to connect with life fully. The Sabian Symbol is "A lady wrapped in a large stole of fox fur: The use of intelligence and mental subtlety as a protection against storms and trials." The Fox has been considered a symbol of cleverness and his being aware and adaptable are attributes which serve us well as we confront charged situations ourselves (and they do come up!).

September 9 the Sun connects with transformative Pluto in earthy, ambitious Capricorn, encouraging us to formulate career goals which have real substance and promise of future success. Mercury meanwhile is returning to his home base of Virgo, one step closer to his comfort zone.

Venus in Leo, Goddess of Love and Money, is on a roll between September 15 and 17 when she connects with serious Saturn, moves on to flirt with magnanimous Jupiter and wraps up her adventure dancing with Uranus. Are we basking is the exuberance beautiful Venue is sharing with us?

September 19 she enters Virgo and her focus turns to an intellectual approach to pleasure and a concern to serve others. We may be tempted to veer towards a tendency to perfectionism so let's make it a point to avoid self-criticism or being too judgmental of others.  Mercury's now back on track and helps us take a detached view while setting us up to experience the New Moon (new beginnings) in Virgo.

This New Moon of September 19/20 connects with Pluto and Saturn who each epitomize power and the Symbol states "A baldheaded man who has seized power: The sheer power of personality in times that call for decision." Dane Rudhyar's commentary expresses that when patterns of order and refinement are challenged, personages emerge whose decisions alter structures. For us it means cathartic changes which motivate us to make meaningful personal decisions. Our self-reflection is a strong resource in helping us as we confront surprising developments which require action. Isn't it helpful to feel we're being proactive?

September 27 heavy hitters Jupiter and Uranus clash with each other (again) and we may notice tension in the air since they both want their own way. Let's rely on our discernment in avoiding unnecessary drama which swirls around.

September 28 Pluto, Lord of the Underworld, moves forward giving us some leeway in the continuing excavation of our psyches. The thing is, we are bringing up treasure and growing in our self awareness which helps us become more sanguine observers of what is playing out around us. Are we monitoring being overexposed to the media?

September 29 Mercury enters Libra and our thoughts turn to how we create balance in our lives and share it with others. Justice and fairness are concerns of ours as well as cordial socializing - let's encircle ourselves in this ambiance!

Happy Fall and Blessings!

PLANETS & POSSIBILITIES: A LOOK AT THE ASTROLOGY OF AUGUST 2017

© 2017 - Reprinted with permission from Shining Lotus Metaphysical Bookstore newsletter August 2017

by Sally Shotwell

It's Eclipse Season which creates a feeling of anticipation as to what is in store for us personally and globally. Fortunately, long ago astrologers identified the astronomical points called the North Node and South Node, whose placement by sign determines where, when and how long the duration of an eclipse will be. We know that Closure and Letting Go are issues we face at this time, they are followed by the possibility of Creative Renewal in our lives. This series of eclipses present this polarity with the South Node in intellectual, airy Aquarius and the North in noble, fiery Leo. Aquarius represents

Detached Humanitarianism which, when carried too far, can cause us to lose sight of value of the individuals we are and our contributions to the greater good. Leo, at his best, reveres the long process we engage in, striving to identify and embrace our unique potential. We see how reconciling these different influences within ourselves is tricky and we need a push to grow beyond influences which restrict us. Change is now the name of the game, prodding us to grow and engage in the excitement!

August 2 Uranus, The Great Awakener, turns retrograde fiery Aries and assists us in turning inward to reflect on the staggering changes we've experienced in recent years associated with his ongoing confrontation with ruthless Pluto. Pluto himself in structure-oriented earthy Capricorn is harassing bountiful Jupiter, in relationship-minded, airy Libra and digging up psychic material which may be painful but necessary for us to acknowledge. Otherwise it continues to fester like a low grade infection. Yuck!

With a revised perspective we are alert to the possibilities the August 7 Full Moon(culmination) Lunar Eclipse in Aquarius, opposite the Sun in Leo, hold for us. The Sabian Symbol is; "A big business man at his desk: the ability to organize the many aspects of an enterprise involving a large group of human beings." As we consider the principles of the Age of Aquarius, let's not minimize our own power and ability to contribute to group cohesion, valuing our unique contributions to a general wellbeing. Total uniformity is really boring!

August 12 Mercury(our thought-processes) turns backward(retrograde) in practical, earthy Virgo and we know the drill. We're reminded to show patience with ourselves and others and not allow ourselves to rush into any decisions. During this period we can address already existing projects and clear the decks for future ventures. August 13 a reassuring connection between the Sun and serious Saturn in belief-oriented, fiery Sagittarius put their heads together and prod us to have fun while remaining aware of our actions. Let's take advantage of this opportunity since August 15 lovely Venus in sensitive, watery Cancer is confronted by Pluto, destabilizing her emotional equilibrium. Let's keep in mind his penchant to dig up long buried material of our own which surprises us.

Are we allowing a space in our schedule during which we can just chill out and let ourselves slowly process what is going on within and around us?
Are we being gentle with ourselves and not judging ourselves harshly?

August 20 Mars(our vitality) in confident Leo touches base with optimistic Jupiter and share their good cheer with us. Their energy, combined with the self-reflection we are practicing, pays off big time when the benevolent Sun and brilliant Uranus also arrive on the scene. They inspire us to release restricting thought patterns which inhibit us from welcoming the unexpected. We're being prepared to really benefit from the astrological highlight of the year!

This, of course, is the August 21 Total Solar New Moon(new beginnings) Eclipse in Leo. Leo rules the heart and heart-centered creativity which transcends our rational minds, bringing to the fore our yearning to become complete beyond the fragmentation our realm of duality imposes upon us. The Symbol presents a hopeful message for us. "A mermaid emerges from the ocean waves ready for rebirth in human form; the stage at which an intense feeling - intuition rising from the unconscious is about to take form as a conscious thought." As we nurture and trust our instincts to venture into the symbolic world of archetypes, new horizons and dimensions await us. Heres where our interest in the symbolic language of astrology can guide us.

For the time being, however, we have the Moon(our emotions) entering Virgo followed August 22 by the Sun. Their "feet on the ground" take on things helps us to not get off track as we approach the demands we face from our every day lives. Mercury is retrograde until September 5 and reminds us that restraint is helpful while we assimilate our altered perceptions which may have surfaced during recent days. Change and growth are related and we're encouraged to honor and not rush the ongoing process.

What impressions do we have of our Eclipse experience?
Are you able to compare notes with others and discuss their observations?

August 25 Teacher Saturn turns direct and guides us to turn our attention from introspection to our outer circumstances. He always demands we be conscious of what we're doing with our time. He is responsible for guiding us to greater maturity and offers great rewards after our struggles.
Where have we refined our perceptions to become more inclusive and tolerant?

Answers may come to us as Mercury returns to Leo August 31 and triggers the point of the Lunar Eclipse. This means that new energy is made available to us and who knows what this means for us? This whole month is jam packed with activity and a sense of mystery. It is so nice we're on this wild ride together!

Blessings and Love!

PLANETS AND POSSIBILITIES: A LOOK AT THE ASTROLOGY OF JULY 2017

© 2017 - Reprinted with permission from Shining Lotus Metaphysical Bookstore newsletter July 2017

by Sally Shotwell

This month begins with our attention directed to the highly charged Fourth of July weekend and the probability that we interact with others, hopefully in a pleasurable way. The Sun (our consciousness), Mars (our vitality), and Mercury (our thought processes) are in watery, sensitive Cancer and we may feel slightly overwhelmed and inclined to seek the company of close friends and family who offer us a supportive haven. Cancer’s symbol is the Crab who creates a shell to cover his soft, vulnerable body to protect himself from environmental threats. This image is somewhat misleading since this is the cardinal, assertive water sign and driven to protect and nurture those in need. The Great Mother, creator of us all, is its archetype and the Moon is its ruler, whose cycles control the tides and our unconscious, emotional life. This seems intimidating but let’s turn our focus to the relationship a devoted mother establishes as she nurtures her dependent infant, bonding the two together in heart-based love. This ideal is seldom truly realized but this is the nurturance we hope to achieve with those we care about.

Are we making ourselves available to our loved ones?
Are we extending kindness to ourself?

As we wend our way through the month, we should make our goal  to participate in cordial interaction and if things get tense, head for the hills. June 2, Mars and relentless Pluto in serious Capricorn challenge each other in a power struggle and July 4, erratic Uranus in fiery Aries annoys Mercury. Fortunately, charming Venus enters airy, witty Gemini shares her refreshing breeze, cooling off heated egos and this sets the stage nicely for the gifts July 5th brings.

First, the Sun and dreamy Neptune in watery, ethereal Pisces work together to help us tune into our spiritual/emotional intelligence, broadening our understanding of ourselves and others. Then, Mercury is renewed(as are our thoughts) when he slips into ebullient, fiery Leo and directs our attention to taking advantage of the fun Summer activities awaiting us.

Are we giving ourselves permission to play or even just hang out?

July 8
the Full Moon(culmination) is in responsible Capricorn, bent on tangibly contributing security to society as a whole. This is in contrast to the Cancer Sun’s focus creating a safe environment for our immediate community. Since the emphasis with both is to serve others there is much common ground. There are several other planets impacting this Moon so it is quite charged. The Sabian Symbol states: “The Union Jack flag flies from a British warship: The protection offered to individuals and groups by powerful institutions in charge of bringing order.” Both these signs look to the past to learn what has worked and what we should not repeat. Where great power is exerted, great care must be given to prevent its abuse and we need to be aware of what is taking place both personally and politically. July 9, the Sun and Pluto clash and could create unwelcome news. Our detachment will continue to greatly assist us during the tumult!

July 17,
lovely Venus and Neptune do not see eye to eye, leading us to check out how realistic our relationship expectations may be. This can have a happy outcome and save us from unpleasantness as Mars and Uranus act out and force us to pay attention to our situation. July 18, things calm down with Venus joining benevolent Jupiter in harmony-oriented Libra, introducing a sense of renewal and optimism which perks us up. July 19, Mercury and Saturn put their heads together and share imaginative thoughts and practical strategies for us,
planting the seed to help us get our show on the road.

July 20,
Mars enters Leo and feels rejuvenated and able to exude his fiery warmth again. The Sun and Uranus are not happy with each other but we can direct our attention to July 22 when the Sun returns to his Leo home. He’s emitting largesse and enthusiasm and sharing his vitality with us as we prepare for the New Moon in Leo July 23. This New Moon(new beginnings) concentrates on releasing material which has not been available to our consciousness before. This is a big deal as the Symbol says: “Blood rushes to a man’s head as his vital energies are mobilized under the spur of ambition: An irruption of bio-psychic energies into the ego-controlled field of consciousness.” This suggests a breakthrough in our personal growth but let’s make sure we moderate our responses and make sure we drink a lot of water and remain low key.

July 25,
Mercury moves into earthy, practical Virgo, the home sign in which he becomes a bastion of organization. He lends us a sense of calm which comes in handy as July 26 the Sun and Mars put their heads together prodding us to employ our courage and implement our vision to share this vision to help others. July 30 Venus connects with electric Uranus reinforcing the theme that we should expand our expectations and venture forth into new, uncharted territory.

What do we yearn to communicate to others?

July 31,
the month wraps up with Venus exiting Gemini for the comfy, watery embrace of Cancer and she’s on to something. Water can be soothing and therapeutic as well as cleansing and respite from our hectic pace. She’s presenting us with nourishing niche in which to rest and ponder our recent adventures. We’re certainly on a fast learning curve and holding our own!
Blessings and Love
